Wisdom Teeth Extraction Options: Find Your Match
There are two types of wisdom tooth extraction: simple and surgical. Both types aim to minimise discomfort and complications, often using sedation or anaesthesia to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Our dentist will assess the position and condition of your wisdom teeth through X-rays or other imaging studies to determine which type of extraction is appropriate for you.
Simple Extraction
A simple extraction is performed on a wisdom tooth that has fully erupted and is visible above the gum line. The procedure involves loosening the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and then removing it with dental forceps. Local anaesthesia is typically sufficient for this type of extraction, and the recovery time is generally shorter compared to surgical extractions.
Surgical Extraction
A surgical extraction is more complicated and is often necessary for impacted wisdom teeth or those that have not fully erupted. In this procedure, the oral surgeon may need to make an incision in the gums and may also remove some of the bone around the tooth. Depending on the complexity, the procedure may require local anaesthesia, IV sedation, or even general anaesthesia. Recovery may take longer, and there's usually more post-operative care involved.
